Rhythm Heaven - for NDS

Rhythm Heaven is Nintendo's pure and joyful test of timing on the Nintendo DS, developed and published by Nintendo in 2008. There is no clutter to it: each stage is a short game built around one song, and your only job is to move in time with the music. What makes Rhythm Heaven stand out is how much it draws from so little, since everything runs on three simple motions with the stylus, tapping, sliding and flicking, used in dozens of ways you would never predict.

Every game opens with a brief tutorial so you can get the hang of it, then trusts you completely. You might flick to construct machinery, release the stylus at just the right moment to belt out a loud note, slide to rub a lizard's tail in time to a mating dance beat, tap to gulp down dumplings, or tap and flick your way through harvesting vegetables and getting rid of moles. After every four games comes a remix, which stitches the earlier ones into a hectic mix where you never know what will be up next. Holding the DS sideways like a book makes the stylus feel less like a button and more like a drum.

People still love Rhythm Heaven for its humor and its honesty: you either feel the beat or you do not, and the moment you do feel it is wonderful. The stages are short enough to replay for a better result and strange enough that you will find yourself describing them to friends. For collectors it is one of the most distinctive cartridges on the DS, a Nintendo made music game with art, writing and tunes that sound like nothing else on the system. Rhythm Heaven is the kind of game you keep so you can hand it to someone and watch them grin.
