RoadBlasters - for Genesis

RoadBlasters is a driving and shooting hybrid for the Sega Genesis, converted by Tengen from the Atari coin op of the same name and published by U.S. Gold in 1991. The setup is lean and perfect: imagine a time and place where no laws govern the highways, where every other driver is out to get you, and where you sit behind the wheel of a heavily armed, high performance car facing an unending stretch of deadly road. RoadBlasters asks you to drive fast and shoot straight at the same moment, and that combination is still rare.

Each stage is a run to the next checkpoint with your fuel draining the whole way, and the fuel globes scattered along the route are the only thing keeping you moving, with more awarded as you reach checkpoints and rally points. Between you and the finish are speedy Stingers, armored Command cars, evasive Rat Jeeps, darting Cycles, roadside gun turrets and bombs thrown from enemy vehicles. To even the odds a support jet flies overhead and drops special weapons such as cruise missiles, Nitro Injectors, U.Z. Cannons and Electro Shields, and grabbing one at the right instant is often the difference between a clean run and a wreck.

RoadBlasters still works because its loop is so direct. One more globe, one more checkpoint, one more try, and the runs are short enough that the next attempt always feels reasonable. It is one of the better arcade conversions on the Genesis and an easy game to hand to someone who has never played it. For collectors, RoadBlasters represents the early Genesis years and Tengen's own corner of the library, and it rounds out a shelf of racers and shooters nicely, being both at once.
