RoadBlasters brought high speed action to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, converted by Beam Software and published by Mindscape from the arcade smash. The race is on: RoadBlasters is the ultimate contest of futuristic warfare, a brutal combination of high speed racing and deadly combat, seen from behind your armoured vehicle as the road rushes at you. Fuel, rather than a lap timer, is the real clock, and that single idea gives the game its character. You are always driving a little faster than is sensible, because slowing down is how you run dry.

Fifty levels of nonstop action stand between you and the end, each one finishing at a rally point. Command Cars, Cycles, Stingers and Rat Jeeps combine forces to prevent you from getting there, and you answer with laser artillery as you spin around the turns. For extra firepower, a support plane drops special weapons: U.Z. Cannons, Nitro Injectors, Electro Shields and Cruise Missiles. Fuel left behind by wrecked rivals keeps you going, so there is a constant trade between shooting, steering and simply surviving. RoadBlasters is a single player game, and a demanding one.

Players still love RoadBlasters because it never lets up. The handling is tight, the difficulty is honest, and the fuel gauge turns every stage into a small act of nerve. It is also one of the better arcade conversions Beam Software produced for the NES, which earns it a real place on the console's racing shelf alongside the gentler titles. For collectors, RoadBlasters is the NES home of an arcade favourite and a satisfying cartridge to own. Only one warrior prevails in the end, and the game is happy to keep reminding you of that.
