RoboCop 2 - for NES

RoboCop 2 followed on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed by Painting by Numbers and published by Data East, and it takes the armoured cop in a more acrobatic direction than the first game did. Old Detroit is now flooded with the lethal drug Nuke, the gangs selling it are everywhere, and waiting at the end of it all is the terror that is RoboCop 2 itself. Seven levels of muscle straining, reflex testing, sideways scrolling fury is how it was sold, and the game plays like it means every word.

Where the first game marched, RoboCop 2 climbs: platforms, ladders and jumps are part of the route now, alongside the shooting. You work through each stage destroying the Nuke supply and facing a stream of deadly Nuke gangs, with a power meter standing in for health and weapon upgrades to find on the way. Bonus rounds between stages break up the fighting, and the whole thing rewards learning a level's layout rather than charging at it. RoboCop 2 supports two players, so a friend can take a turn at the job.

Players still love RoboCop 2 because it is tougher and busier than its predecessor, and because it keeps the look and mood of the film while giving you much more to do. It is a demanding game, the kind that teaches you its stages one hard lesson at a time, and finishing it still feels like an achievement. For collectors, RoboCop 2 completes the Data East pair on the NES and makes a natural companion to the first game. Set the two side by side and the shelf looks right.
