RoboCop 3 - for NES

RoboCop 3 came to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed by Probe Software and published by Ocean Software, two names that filled the late eighties and early nineties with games built from film licenses. The setting is Old Detroit, and the pitch on the box has not softened with age: the streets are full of danger, and only one man can stand alone against such numbers. RoboCop 3 hands you state of the art weaponry, a skin of steel and nerves to match, then sends you out after evil doers wherever they appear.

This is a single player blend of platforming and shooting. RoboCop moves with the weight the character demands, slow and unstoppable rather than nimble, and most of the game is about picking off the gunmen and machines that crowd each stage before they wear you down. Enemies come from ahead, behind and above, so RoboCop 3 rewards a patient advance and careful shooting over charging in. Stages take you through the broken city on foot, with the energy you have left acting as the real clock, and the controls stay lean: walk, aim, fire and keep going until the street is clear.

Part of the lasting appeal of RoboCop 3 is how seriously it plays the part. It is a stern, metallic sort of action game, with the grim tone of the films intact and none of the bounce of a cartoon platformer, and players who grew up with it remember exactly how it felt to hold the line in Old Detroit. The RoboCop games on the NES make a tidy little run for a shelf, and RoboCop 3 is the last of them, which gives it a natural place in a collection of licensed 8 bit action.
