RoboCop - for NES

RoboCop arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, developed by Sakata SAS and published by Data East, and it turns the film's grim vision of old Detroit into a hard hitting action game. A sadistic crime wave is sweeping the city, the situation is so bad that a private corporation, O.C.P., has assumed control of the police force, and a research team answers with an unstoppable, indestructible law enforcement cyborg. You are RoboCop, and the job is as blunt as it sounds: walk into the worst parts of town and stop every criminal you encounter with deadly, piercing accuracy.

Six levels of sideways scrolling action follow, and RoboCop moves exactly as he should: slow, heavy and impossible to push around. You punch at close range and switch to a wild assortment of weapons at a distance, starting with his special issue sidearm, while a power meter drains as you take hits, so progress depends on keeping your armour intact. There are forces on the street and inside O.C.P. that will stop at nothing to see RoboCop eliminated, which means Boddicker, a towering enforcement droid and a final confrontation with Dick Jones.

Players still love RoboCop because the weight of it is right. Few NES games commit so completely to making you feel armoured, and the stiff pace that frustrates newcomers is the same thing that makes a clean run so satisfying. The music and the stark Detroit backdrops have aged well too. For collectors, RoboCop is one of the defining Data East licences on the NES and the first half of a pair with its sequel. Your move, creep.
