RoboCop Versus The Terminator - for Genesis

RoboCop Versus The Terminator is an action platformer for the Sega Genesis, developed by Virgin Games and published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment in 1994, loosely based on the 1992 comic book mini series of four issues that put two of the era's great machines into one story. RoboCop's own technology is used to build Skynet, which becomes self aware, launches its war against mankind and sends Terminators back through time to cripple the Resistance. The Genesis release was the lead version of the game, programmed by Virgin Games USA on David Perry's engine for the console, and that pedigree shows in how it looks and moves.

Play carries RoboCop from the streets through Delta City, into the OCP building and on to a Terminator infested future, walking, climbing, dropping down levels and shooting almost constantly. The arsenal grows well past the service pistol as you go, and ammunition for the heavier guns is worth saving for the right moment. RoboCain waits in Delta City, Terminators arrive in numbers rather than one at a time, and the fight eventually reaches Skynet itself. RoboCop Versus The Terminator is a single player game, built around learning each stretch of it and spending your firepower wisely.

The game is remembered for how uncompromising it is. Enemies burst apart, the music grinds along, and the whole thing commits to its crossover instead of apologizing for it. The Genesis version is the one players point to, and RoboCop Versus The Terminator remains one of the better regarded licensed cartridges on the console. For collectors it is a double license curiosity that happens to play very well, and for players it is a loud, tough action game that still delivers.
