RoboWarrior - for NES

RoboWarrior landed on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by Hudson Soft and published by Jaleco. Hudson was the studio behind Bomberman, and the family resemblance is plain: RoboWarrior takes the idea of a lone figure clearing ground with bombs and rebuilds it as a grim one man war. You are Zed, half man and half cyborg, a battalion of one with a human heart and a computer's brain, landing on the planet Altile after the invader Xur seizes the weather control station and drives the freezing population underground.

The game runs across 27 battle zones seen from above. Bombs are your main tool, used to break through walls, uncover hidden items and catch the enemies that come at you flying, dive bombing and grabbing: Wisps, Wanes, Tracers, Strinkers, Skraugs and the rest of a roster twenty strong. Scattered through Altile are 12 weapons and 6 powers to find and master, from megaton bombs and hyper missiles to life vests, super boots and energy capsules. There are keys to track down as well, since a zone with no key found is a zone you stay blocked in, and a hidden chalice waits for players who search hard enough.

RoboWarrior still appeals because it is tougher and stranger than its cheerful cousins. Progress depends on careful bombing, on reading each screen before you commit and on managing what you carry, and that slow, searching rhythm is exactly what players return to it for. It sits in an interesting spot in any collection: a Hudson Soft design given a stern science fiction coat, brought to the NES by Jaleco, and a fine example of how much one studio could get out of a single simple idea.
