Rocket Knight Adventures - for Genesis

Rocket Knight Adventures is an action platformer developed and published by Konami for the Sega Genesis in 1993, made at the height of the company's 16 bit run. You play Sparkster, a sword carrying opossum in armour whose jet pack turns an ordinary platform game into something far less predictable. Konami built Rocket Knight Adventures around that single idea, a hero who can launch himself across a room and bounce off its walls, then wrapped it in bright animation, inventive bosses and a score that has been admired ever since. The story is pure cartoon mischief: an empire of pig creatures is reaching for the Key to the Pig Star, and their emperor has to be stopped.

The game runs across seven stages, each one changing shape as you move through it. Sparkster swings his blade, charges his jet pack and fires himself in any direction, grips ledges with his tail and ricochets through rooms that reward players who learn to aim rather than simply run. Between the platforming come flying and riding sections and a string of mechanical bosses, among them the Giant Pigbot and the Drill Of A Lifetime, plus a room of rotating gravity where the Black Knight Axel Gear waits and mirrored lava pools that play tricks on the eye. It is a single player adventure, with difficulty options for players who want the full challenge.

Players still love Rocket Knight Adventures for its generosity. Every stage introduces something new, the bosses stay in the memory, and the jet pack gives Sparkster a freedom of movement that few platform heroes of the time could match. It is also a reminder of how confident Konami was in this period, with spritework and music that hold up decades later. Rocket Knight Adventures has long been one of the Genesis titles collectors ask for by name, and it belongs on the shelf beside the other great platform games of the generation.
