Rockin' Kats - for NES

Rockin' Kats is a 1991 platformer developed and published by Atlus for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and it is one of the best looking games on the system. You play Willy, the hippest cool Kat in New York, hot on the tail of local crime boss Mugsy after Mugsy makes off with Willy's girl Jill and stashes her away. Rockin' Kats wears its cartoon influence openly, all rubbery animation and jazz club swagger, and Atlus gave it a presentation that still reads as confident decades later.

Willy's great trick is the gun on his arm, which fires a boxing glove on a spring. It punches enemies, but it also latches onto surfaces, so Rockin' Kats becomes a game of swinging, hauling yourself upward and launching across gaps as much as a game of jumping. The single player adventure takes you through hoods on the streets of the Big Apple, a duel with desperados in the wild west, a dog fight with ace pilots at 40,000 feet and an amusement park that would rather derail you, and each stage is built around learning what that glove can reach. Willy breaks into dancing and body slamming when the fur starts flying.

Rockin' Kats is loved because one idea, a punch on a spring, carries a whole game. The movement feels like nothing else on the NES, the music has a bounce that sticks, and the charm of Willy's world keeps people replaying it for the feel rather than the finish. It also arrived late in the console's life, which has long made Rockin' Kats a sought after platformer for NES collections, and a fine showcase of what Atlus could do with an 8 bit cat and a very silly weapon.
