Rollerball - for NES

Rollerball is a pinball game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by HAL Laboratory and published by HAL America in 1988. HAL was in its inventive early stride at the time, and Rollerball is pitched as pinball with a distinctly American touch: two games in one cartridge, built for a family to crowd around rather than for one player quietly chasing a score. The box promised a brand new type of game for the kids and a familiar old friend for the parents, with the cheerful boast that Rollerball will not tilt.

Skyscraper is the main event, a fast and realistic pinball table that scrolls vertically across four screens, so the ball travels well beyond a single view and the table keeps revealing new targets as you work your way up. It takes one to four players, passing the controller between turns. Matchplay is the other half, a one on one game for two players where the table becomes a direct contest and any pinball wizard gets tested. Between the two, Rollerball covers both the solo high score chase and the sort of head to head play that keeps a room busy for an evening.

Rollerball still gets praise for how it feels. The ball has real weight to it, the flippers answer the way you want them to, and the scrolling table gives the game a sense of scale that most 8 bit pinball never managed, which is why Rollerball is often the first NES pinball game people recommend. For collectors it is also a HAL Laboratory design from before the studio became famous for other things, and a four player cartridge that earns its place on any shelf of NES pinball.
