Rolling Thunder 3 - for Genesis

Rolling Thunder 3 is a shooter built for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by Now Production and published by Namco. Unlike the games before it, it never passed through arcades, which makes it the entry series followers talk about most. Its story runs at the same time as the second game: at the end of the twentieth century satellites are being shot down around the globe and communications are collapsing, and the secret agency Rolling Thunder traces the terror to Geldra. While agents Leila and Albatross go after the leader Gimdo, agent Jay is sent to bring down the second in command, Dread.

Rolling Thunder 3 is a single player game that keeps the deliberate pace of the series. You advance on foot in side view, using the layered floors and the doorways along each route for cover and supplies, and you survive by reading how enemies appear rather than charging into them. Firepower plays a larger part here, with heavier weapons to find and spend carefully before the ammunition runs dry, and the mission structure moves Jay through a sequence of varied settings on his way to Dread. Short bursts of fire, good positioning and a sense of when to back off will take you much further than speed.

Players return to Rolling Thunder 3 for its atmosphere and for the clean, readable action that the series does so well. It is handsome, measured and genuinely demanding, the sort of game that teaches you a stage rather than handing it over. Because it was made for the Genesis and nothing else, Rolling Thunder 3 is harder to come across than its predecessor, which is exactly why it is worth having. Set beside Rolling Thunder 2 it completes the story of Geldra's downfall from both sides.
