Saint Sword is an action platform game developed by Cyclone System and published by Taito for the Sega Genesis in 1991. You are Macress, a mythical warrior called on to destroy the evil demon Gorgon before the world succumbs to his power. Saint Sword leans on blade swinging combat more than precise jumping, and its most distinctive idea is transformation: destroy enough of the small mythical beasts in your path and you earn powers that change what Macress is, granting him physical attributes such as angel wings or the body of a horse. It gives a fairly traditional platform adventure a flavour of its own.

Play is built around cutting a way forward through each stage, collecting the power ups that fall from defeated creatures and turning them into those physical changes, which open up new ways to move and to fight. The transformations are the heart of it, and much of the game is about keeping them alive, since taking hits means giving ground. Macress handles with a bit of weight to him, so timing a swing matters more than speed, and the stages grow steadily more crowded and more dangerous as Gorgon's influence spreads. Saint Sword is a single player quest from beginning to end.

Saint Sword has kept a quiet following among Genesis players who like to look past the obvious titles. It is a product of the console's early years, with a mythological setting and a transformation system that nothing else quite copies, and that mix of the familiar and the odd is a large part of its appeal. Because it was never one of the system's big sellers, Saint Sword is the sort of cartridge that rounds out a collection nicely: a Taito published action game that most shelves are missing.
