Samurai Shodown - for Genesis

Samurai Shodown is a weapon based fighting game, brought to the Sega Genesis in 1994 by System Vision and published by Takara. It follows the arcade game that gave the fighting genre a very different character, trading fists for steel. The setting is early feudal Japan, where a man named Shiro Tokisada Amakusa preaches a heretic religion. What nobody realises is that Amakusa has been possessed and taken over by the evil Ambrosia, who means to shroud the world in eternal darkness. Samurai Shodown asks you to pick a warrior, take up a blade and end him.

Twelve fierce warriors are available along with three bonus characters, and each one has a mission of their own to fulfil on the road to Amakusa. Because everybody fights armed, exchanges are shorter and sharper than in the empty handed games of the day: one well judged strike takes a serious bite out of a life bar, and blades clash when two attacks meet in the same instant. One or two players can play, so the cartridge serves as both a solo run through the roster and a head to head game for an evening with a friend. For completeness, the Genesis version does not include Earthquake, who was removed because of the memory and size limits of the format.

Samurai Shodown still has a devoted following for its tension. Fights swing fast, defence counts, and the historical setting and character designs have aged better than most. Seeing it run on Sega hardware is part of the interest too, a conversion of a famously demanding game squeezed onto a cartridge. For collectors, Samurai Shodown is one of the more notable fighting games in the Genesis library and a good place to start if you are gathering the console's fighters.
