Scribblenauts is a puzzle platformer for the Nintendo DS, developed by 5th Cell and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in 2009. It arrived with one of the boldest ideas on the system: write a word on the touch screen and the thing appears. The dictionary behind Scribblenauts runs to more than 20,000 words, from ladders and footballs to helicopters, albatrosses, dinosaurs, weapons, historical figures and the odd piece of internet culture, and almost all of it can be dropped straight into the level to be pushed, ridden or simply set loose.

Each stage asks Maxwell to collect a starite, and how he gets there is entirely your business. If something is stuck in a tree you might summon a ladder, throw a football at it, or just fly over with a helicopter or a very large bird. Most puzzles fall to two to four summoned objects, and the game is happy to let strange chains of logic work. Profanity and trademarked names are left out of the dictionary, and a spelling checker offers suggestions when a word does not land. The approach continues the thinking behind 5th Cell's earlier Drawn to Life: the game is a toolbox and a goal, and no two sessions look alike.

Scribblenauts is still loved because that first hour of testing the dictionary is one of the great video game experiences, and because the game so rarely says no. Players still compare solutions years later, and writing with the stylus feels like a trick the DS was built for. For collectors it is essential. Scribblenauts is a landmark Nintendo DS title, the start of a series, and a clear case of a studio betting everything on one idea and getting it right. Few cartridges make a better argument for what the two screens could do.
