Sesame Street ABC & 123 - for NES

Sesame Street ABC & 123 is a compilation cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System, released in 1991 by Hi Tech Expressions with development by Zippo Games. It gathers two earlier Sesame Street releases, Sesame Street 1 2 3 and Sesame Street A B C, onto a single cartridge, which makes Sesame Street ABC & 123 the tidiest way to own the pair. Letters and numbers in one place, with the Sesame Street cast doing the explaining, was an easy sell for parents in the early nineties, and it is still the most practical of the Sesame Street releases on the console.

Because this is a compilation, the menu is the starting point: choose the letters side or the numbers side and the cartridge takes you straight into it. The A B C half covers letter recognition and matching, simple spelling and word formation, including the ferris wheel of letters and the activity where Ernie needs a pathway built so his rubber duckie can reach the bathtub. The 1 2 3 half turns the same gentle approach toward counting and early number work. Everything is for one player, the menus are simple enough for a child to move through alone, and sessions can be as short as a young attention span allows.

Sesame Street ABC & 123 has lasted because it is kind to beginners. There is no reflex test waiting at the end, just friendly characters, clear tasks and a tone that treats a four year old as perfectly capable. Parents who grew up with it now bring it out for their own children, and it still works. For collectors, Sesame Street ABC & 123 is the one that completes the set, a two in one release that marks the point where the Sesame Street line on the NES was popular enough to repackage. It is a warm, modest piece of the console's history and it earns its place on the shelf.
