Sesame Street ABC - for NES

Sesame Street ABC is an educational cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Zippo Games and published by Hi Tech Expressions in 1989. It was made for the youngest players in the house, the ones still sorting out their letters, and it hands the teaching over to the Sesame Street cast so the whole thing feels like an afternoon with familiar friends. What makes Sesame Street ABC stand out in the NES library is its calm, encouraging tone. This is a console famous for ninjas and spaceships, and here is a quiet letters game built for preschoolers.

Sesame Street ABC is divided into two parts. In Letter Go Round, letters ride a spinning ferris wheel and children catch and match them, practising letter recognition and matching along with simple spelling and word formation. In Ernie's Big Splash, Ernie needs his rubber duckie for bath time, and the job is to build a pathway from the duckie's soap dish all the way to the bathtub, which gives children a friendly introduction to planning, predicting and problem solving. Both halves are for one player, and both are paced so that a small child can sit down with the controller and understand what to do.

Players still love Sesame Street ABC because for a lot of people it was a first game, the cartridge a parent put in before the family library grew into anything else. The pace is unhurried, the characters are the ones children already trust, and the activities hold up as a genuinely sweet way to spend time with a young player today. For collectors, Sesame Street ABC is part of the educational corner of the NES catalogue that is easy to overlook and surprisingly charming once you go looking for it, and it sits nicely beside the other Sesame Street titles on the shelf.
