Sesame Street Countdown - for NES

Sesame Street Countdown is an educational game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by RSP and published by Hi Tech Expressions in 1992. It gives the lead role to Count von Count, which is exactly right, since the whole point of Sesame Street Countdown is learning to identify numbers. Arriving late in the console's life, it plays a little more like a game and a little less like a lesson: there are levels to cross, a life bar to protect and a number of the day to chase, so a child is playing a platform game and practising numbers at the same time.

Each level begins with a spinning number wheel that picks the number of the day at random, and from there the player chooses to hop or to run across the stage, collecting as many examples of that number as possible. The only way to lose is to touch the wrong numbers, which drains the life bar, so the challenge is about looking before you leap rather than fast fingers. Two bonus levels round things out, putting counting and simple addition and subtraction to work. It is a one player game, and the random wheel means no two runs through Sesame Street Countdown play out quite the same.

Sesame Street Countdown is remembered fondly because it respects the player it was made for. The Count is good company, the rules are explained in a single sentence, and the mix of hopping, running and counting keeps young players moving instead of waiting. For collectors, Sesame Street Countdown is a 1992 release from the quieter educational side of the NES catalogue, the sort of cartridge that does not turn up in every collection. It belongs with the other Sesame Street titles as part of a shelf that tells the whole story of the console rather than just its loudest hits.
