Shadow Blasters - for Genesis

Shadow Blasters arrived on the Sega Genesis in 1990, developed by Cyclone System and published by Sage's Creation. It builds on a simple and very appealing idea: the forces of darkness, the phantoms of Ashura, have spread across the Earth, and the only answer is a group of warriors drawn from distant times, each one carrying supernatural powers. Where most Genesis action games of the period handed you a gun, Shadow Blasters puts the power at your fingertips instead, with heroes who hurl the Flames of Justice at everything the darkness sends. That comic book premise, set against a moody vision of a modern world under siege, gives the game a character all its own.

In play, Shadow Blasters is a mix of platforming and shooting. You take a warrior through stages of city streets and stranger places, clearing out phantoms with ranged attacks while jumping across gaps and ledges. The warriors are not interchangeable: their attacks and their movement feel different, so a stretch that frustrates one hero can suit another, and choosing well is part of the strategy. Two players can take on Ashura's forces together, which turns a demanding game into a far friendlier one and makes it a good pick for an evening on the couch.

Shadow Blasters was never one of the household names of the Genesis era, and that is a large part of why collectors seek it out. It is a window into 1990, when publishers were still working out what the hardware could do, and it has the direct, challenging design that players of that generation grew up on. For anyone building a Genesis shelf that goes beyond the obvious hits, Shadow Blasters is one of those finds that gets picked up and played, not just displayed.
