Shining Force - for Genesis

Shining Force arrived on the Sega Genesis in 1992, developed by Climax Entertainment and published by Sega of America. A thousand years before the story opens, legendary warriors of light drove the Dark Dragon into another dimension, and he swore that one day he would break back through the barrier. Now the kingdom of Runefaust is tearing through the lands of Rune to help him do it, and a small band of warriors sets out to stop them. Shining Force was the first tactical role playing game many players in the West ever met, and it won them over with bright, warm art and a cast you come to care about.

The game alternates between two halves. Out of battle you walk through towns and talk to everyone, buying equipment and gathering warriors who want Runefaust stopped. Then the fighting begins and the view lifts to a map where you move each member of your force square by square, deciding who leads the advance and who hangs back to heal. Every warrior has their own strengths and weaknesses, gains new weapons and spells as they grow, and can be promoted into a stronger form of their class, so the force you finish with reflects the choices you made along the way.

Shining Force is still the game people recommend to anyone curious about tactical role playing games, because it teaches the genre gently without ever feeling thin. The look has aged beautifully, the music is fondly remembered, and the slow business of turning a ragtag group into a real army has lost none of its pull. It is the start of a line that runs through Shining Force II and beyond, and a Genesis collection with Shining Force on the shelf has one of the console's finest role playing games in place.
