Shining Force II - for Genesis

Shining Force II, developed by Sonic Co. and published by Sega of America in 1993, continues Sega's tactical role playing series with an entirely new story. In the eerie Cave of the Past a mischievous thief tampers with the mystical Stones of Light and Dark, which once imprisoned the Evil of All Ages, and the deadly Zeon is unleashed with rage enough to hurl the galaxy into eternal darkness. Only the Shining Force can stop him. Bigger, longer and more confident than the game before it, Shining Force II is widely held to be the high point of the series on the Genesis.

The shape will be familiar to anyone who played the first game: explore towns and countryside, talk to everyone, outfit your fighters, then take to the battlefield where every unit moves and attacks in its turn. The scale is what changed. You build a twelve member strike force from a roster of more than twenty characters and develop them into fiercer, stronger, more magical warriors as the campaign goes on. Battles are punctuated by cinematic sequences when blows land, the monsters are memorable, and the world is open enough that wandering off the path is usually rewarded.

Shining Force II is loved for the warmth of its cast, the generosity of its length and how fair it stays while still asking real thought of you. It is the game that sent a lot of players looking for more tactical role playing games, and it holds up well against anything that came after. For collectors, Shining Force II is one of the Genesis cartridges that genuinely belongs in the top rank, a game to keep within reach rather than file away.
