Shining Soul - for GBA

Shining Soul is an action role playing game for the Game Boy Advance, developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, published by Sega and released in 2003. It puts you in a world of magic and mystery where your closest allies may sometimes turn out to be your worst enemies, in the final stage of a desperate war between the Dark Dragon and a group of warriors known as the Shining Fleet. What makes Shining Soul stand out is its shape: rather than the turn based tactics the Shining name was known for, this is a brisk dungeon crawler built around loot and cooperative play.

You begin by picking one of four character classes: fighter, wizard, archer or dragonute, each with its own rhythm in a fight. From there you customize your character's color schemes, weapons and armor as you find them, so no two heroes look quite the same. Shining Soul is about descending into dungeons, clearing out what lives there, hauling the spoils home and coming back stronger. You can take the whole quest alone, or link up and play with as many as three friends, four adventurers cutting through the same corridors at once.

Shining Soul endures because it is so easy to sit down with: a few minutes buys a new sword, a better set of armor or another level, and the four classes give it real replay value. Cooperative dungeon runs for four players were rare on handhelds of this era, which is a large part of why this one still gets passed between friends. For collectors, Shining Soul is both a distinctive branch of Sega's Shining family and an early credit for Grasshopper Manufacture, and it sits comfortably beside the rest of a Game Boy Advance role playing shelf.
