Shooting Range is a light gun game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by TOSE and published by Bandai America in 1989. It is played with the Zapper, pointed straight at the screen, and the task is easy to explain and harder to do: shoot the discs on screen and reach the clearing score for the stage before your time or your energy runs out. Shooting Range stands out among NES light gun games for how much it packs in, with themed stages, a long list of scoring items and room for up to four players.
Three difficulty levels set the clock: level one gives you 300 game time, level two gives 250 and level three only 200, so the harder you play the less room you have to miss. Each disc you shoot above an enemy is worth between 100 and 500 points, and the items on screen matter just as much. An hourglass adds 50 to the clock, an E gives 100 points and an energy bar, an E in a white square gives 100 points and two energy bars, a reverse E gives an energy bar on its own, and the C and W symbols are worth 100 points each. The three stages run through a western, a ghost house and a space theme, with a bonus stage where you shoot as many bottles as you can, and a party game mode where everyone competes for the highest score.
Shooting Range is remembered as one of the better reasons to keep the Zapper plugged in. The scoring is generous enough to feel good and strict enough to matter, and with four players taking turns at the high score it becomes a living room game rather than a solo one. For collectors, Shooting Range is a Bandai America release from the peak of the light gun era and a natural companion to the better known Zapper cartridges.
