Sigma Star Saga - for GBA

Sigma Star Saga is a Game Boy Advance role playing game with a space shooter beating inside it, developed by WayForward Technologies, published by Atari and released in 2005. Humanity is fighting to survive an onslaught by the ruthless Krill, and you live in the middle of it as a double agent working both sides while you uncover the secret of six planets. Sigma Star Saga was billed as the first role playing game built on an action packed space shooter battle system, and that promise is still what makes it stand out.

On foot you explore, talk to people and follow a branching story. When a fight begins, the screen hands you a ship and the battle plays out as side scrolling shooting rather than menus and numbers. Your gun is the growth system: more than fifty Gun Data items can be combined into some 27,000 configurations, so building a weapon that suits you becomes the real character progression. Sigma Star Saga runs more than twenty hours and its story forks toward multiple endings, which rewards a second run through.

Players still talk about Sigma Star Saga because very little else plays like it. Mixing a story heavy role playing game with arcade shooting could have gone badly, and instead it produced something strange and confident that holds up beautifully on a handheld screen. It is also a fine example of WayForward's early work and one of the more unusual role playing games Atari put its name to. If you collect Game Boy Advance curiosities, or role playing games that take a real swing at the formula, Sigma Star Saga is a cartridge worth keeping.
