Silent Scope - for GBA

Silent Scope on the Game Boy Advance is Konami's arcade sniper shooter made portable, developed by Now Production, published by Konami and released in 2002. The arcade version debuted in 1999 with its distinctive mounted rifle and scope view, and this cartridge marked the first time Silent Scope had appeared on any handheld console. The appeal is the same as it was in the arcade: a city in crisis, lives in danger and a marksman with a rifle, only now the whole thing fits in your hands.

Play is a matter of looking before you shoot. You sweep the scene, pick your target out of a crowd, steady yourself and fire before the clock runs down, with the scope closing in for the moment that matters. The learning curve is friendly, so the first mission teaches you most of what you need to know. Alongside the main game, this version adds content made specially for the Game Boy Advance plus Training and Challenge modes for practice and scoring, and up to four players can take part in multiplayer.

Silent Scope is still loved because it is pure arcade, short and tense and ideal for a few minutes at a time, with the pull of a cleaner shot bringing you straight back. Compressing a cabinet that size onto a small screen was an ambitious idea, and the result is one of the more memorable shooters in the Game Boy Advance library. For collectors, Silent Scope is a neat piece of Konami arcade history on a handheld and a good conversation starter beside the rest of your shooters.
