Sin and Punishment - for N64

Sin and Punishment is a shooter for the Nintendo 64, developed by Treasure and published by Nintendo in 2000. Treasure had already built a reputation for dense, inventive action games, and Sin and Punishment is the studio at full stretch: a cinematic shooter that keeps you moving forward while enemies pour in from every direction. The setting is bleak and strange. Rogue mutants named Lufian were bred to manage food production on an overpopulated, resource scarce Earth, and they have revolted against their human masters. The army has been soundly defeated, so two teenage heroes, Saki Amamiya and Airan Jo, are all that stands in the way.

Play combines running and gunning with precise aiming: your character travels along a set path while you place a cursor wherever the threat is, firing freely, locking on, or cutting enemies down at close range with a blade. Stages shift constantly, from streets to open skies, and boss fights arrive often and at scale. The difficulty is high and the scoring rewards aggression, so Sin and Punishment is a game you learn through repetition, improving a little on every run. Two players are supported, and voiced cutscenes carry the story between stages as the heroes discover the Lufian's true intention and the danger it poses to the future of Earth.

Sin and Punishment is held in high regard because almost nothing else on the system plays like it. It is loud, fast and generous with spectacle, and the balance between dodging, aiming and slashing still feels fresh, which is why Treasure's work is studied so closely by people who care about action games. For collectors, Sin and Punishment is one of the most desirable titles on Nintendo 64 and a late high point for the hardware, arriving when most attention had moved on. Keep this cartridge within reach and you have half an hour of pure arcade intensity whenever you want it.
