Socket - for Genesis

Socket is a high speed platformer for the Sega Genesis, developed and published by Vic Tokai in 1993. The star is a duck with an attitude and an electric cord for a tail, and the whole game is built around that idea: Socket moves faster than almost anything else on the console, and his power comes straight out of the wall. The packaging put it best, claiming he is quick enough to turn out the lights and get out of the room before it gets dark.

Socket is a one player game, a side scrolling sprint through stages where momentum matters more than careful footwork. The electric cord tail is your attack, and the game wants you using it on the move rather than stopping to trade hits. Stages come at you quickly, with slopes, springs and hazards arranged so that learning a route pays off on the next attempt. Vic Tokai gave Socket bright, busy backdrops and a bouncy soundtrack, very much the house style of early nineties mascot platformers, and the sense of speed still holds up on real hardware.

Socket has a devoted following among Genesis players precisely because it was never a household name. It arrived in 1993, when every publisher wanted a fast animal mascot, and it is one of the few that genuinely delivered the speed it promised. Collectors like it for that reason: a confident, likeable platformer from a smaller publisher, with a hero you will not find anywhere else. If your Genesis shelf already has the famous blue one, Socket is the natural next pick, and it is a friendly game to hand to someone who wants a quick run rather than a long campaign.
