Sonic 3D Blast - for Genesis

Sonic 3D Blast is a 1996 Sega Genesis action platformer developed by Traveller's Tales in the UK and published by Sega Enterprises. Doctor Robotnik has discovered the Flickies, strange birds from an alternate dimension who can travel anywhere using large rings, and he is turning them into robots to help him search for the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic visits Flickies' Island, sees what has been done and sets out to free them. What makes Sonic 3D Blast stand out is the viewpoint: it trades the side on view for an isometric one, late in the console's life and with ambition to match.

Each stage asks you to find captured Flickies and guide them to a ring that sends them home, which makes Sonic 3D Blast closer to exploration than a straight dash for the exit. Sonic still has his spin attack and can still build real speed, but the isometric angle changes how you read a level, and the zones are laid out as places to search rather than tracks to run. Boss encounters close out each zone, and there are special stages to find along the way for players chasing the Chaos Emeralds.

Sonic 3D Blast is remembered as the last major Sonic game on the Genesis, and that alone makes it a landmark. Players love it for how much Traveller's Tales squeezed out of the hardware, with large colourful zones, pre rendered sprites and a soundtrack people still hum. It plays at a gentler pace than the earlier games, which is part of its charm, since there is time to look around. For collectors, Sonic 3D Blast closes out the Genesis Sonic shelf, and it is a fine one to hand to a newcomer who wants something more relaxed than a full speed run.
