Space Invaders - for N64

Space Invaders for the Nintendo 64 is a full 3D rebuild of the arcade game that started the alien invasion craze, developed by Z-Axis and published by Activision in 1999. The silhouette is intact, a lone cannon at the bottom of the screen and ranks of aliens stepping ever closer, but everything around it has been modernised with polygons, explosive special effects, enhanced firepower and high resolution cinematics. Space Invaders is proof that an idea this simple only becomes more dangerously addictive when you hand it a bigger stage.

The main run stretches to 100 levels of classic shoot and dodge play, the familiar sideways shuffle of the alien ranks now arriving in three dimensions with a host of new tricks layered on top. The campaign tours a set of space worlds including Pluto, Saturn, Mars and Earth, each with its own dynamic terrain and interactive background pieces that get caught in the crossfire. Power ups push your cannon well beyond its single shot ancestor, and frenetic multiplayer modes let a second player join the defence of the planet.

Space Invaders endures because the loop is close to perfect: aim, dodge, watch the line creep down, feel the pressure build. This version is the one that carried that loop onto Nintendo's 64 bit machine, which makes it an easy pick for anyone who collects arcade classics in console form, or who wants something a complete newcomer can understand in four seconds flat. Space Invaders is quick to start, hard to put down and a tidy piece of games history to keep on the shelf.
