Spider-Man 3 - for NDS

Spider-Man 3 is an action game for the Nintendo DS, developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Activision in 2007. It ties into the film of the same year and lets players take both sides of the hero: the familiar red suit Spider-Man and, for the first time, his darker and more mysterious black suit persona. Spider-Man 3 is set in a 3D side scrolling world with complete touch screen handling, which gives this version a look and a feel of its own rather than making it a shrunken copy of the console games.

You work through a wide variety of city based missions, choosing your own path across story arcs drawn from the film and others written just for this version. Spider-Man's vast array of moves, attacks and upgrades grows as you go, so swinging, fighting and the choice between the two suits all develop over the course of the game. There is local wireless multiplayer as well, with a set of two player head to head challenges: Brawler, Hot Potato, Target Practice and Combo Challenge, each short enough to settle in a few minutes.

Spider-Man 3 holds up because the handheld team went their own way with it. The side scrolling city, the touch screen handling and the two suits give it a character that the film tie in label does not suggest, and Vicarious Visions had a long run of well made Spider-Man handheld games behind them. For collectors it is a good example of that run, and the head to head modes make it one of the more sociable superhero cartridges on the Nintendo DS. A solid pick for a Spider-Man shelf or a Nintendo DS action collection.
