Splatterhouse 2 - for Genesis

Splatterhouse 2 is Namco's horror beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis, developed by Now Production and published by Namco in 1992. Rick's girlfriend Jennifer is trapped in a living nightmare, and the only way to reach her is to put the terror mask back on and become something strong enough to smash a path through. Splatterhouse 2 was made for the Genesis rather than carried over from another machine, and it keeps the queasy look the series is known for: dim corridors, dripping walls and enemies that come apart when you hit them.

It begins again as a side scrolling fight through a house that does not want you there. You punch, kick and swing whatever each area hands you, from a gnarled fist to a roaring chainsaw, working through oozing zombies, ghastly ghouls and things that drop out of the dark, and each stretch ends with a boss that asks for patience as much as power. Splatterhouse 2 is not generous with health, so learning enemy patterns matters far more than mashing buttons. An iron will and a strong stomach are genuinely part of the kit. One player, and demanding enough that finishing it still counts for something.

Splatterhouse 2 holds its following because almost nothing else on the Genesis looks or feels like it. Horror was rare on consoles then, and this series pushed further than its neighbors, which has given the game a reputation that only grew with time. Collectors want Splatterhouse 2 for that: the middle chapter of a strange, nasty little trilogy, a Genesis exclusive, and an easy favorite to pull out when someone asks what sixteen bit horror actually looked like. Keep it near the top of the shelf and hand it to the right friend after dark.
