Sqoon - for NES

Sqoon is a 1986 Nintendo Entertainment System shooter developed by Home Data and published by Irem, built on one of the more memorable setups of the era. The Neptunian invasion of Earth has begun, the hot water factories are melting the ice caps, the world is sinking, and humans are becoming food for the aliens. You take a submarine beneath the flooded surface to stop it. That rescue mission is what makes Sqoon unusual, because this is a shooter where saving people counts for as much as destroying things, and the premise gives every stage a note of urgency.

You move your craft along the water line, firing at what comes from the air above and the sea below while picking up stranded survivors and bringing them to safety. Along the way you destroy the hot water factories heating the oceans and the bio factories that create the scary Pirame, Anchos and others, before pressing on to the base where the Neptunians themselves live. It is a single player game, and juggling your position on screen, the people you have aboard and the next target to take out gives Sqoon more to think about than its straightforward controls first suggest.

Sqoon has a devoted following because it is strange in the best way. The sinking world, the odd enemy names and the rescue first structure set it apart from the straight ahead shooters it shared shelves with, and it is a short, focused game you can get to know in an evening. Irem's early NES catalogue is a rich area for collectors, and Sqoon is one of its most distinctive pieces: not a household name, but memorable, cheerfully odd, and a fine way to surprise anyone who believes they have seen every shooter on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
