Star Force - for NES

Star Force is a vertical scrolling space shooter that arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, developed by Hudson Soft and published by Tecmo. Its story is pure early eighties science fiction: a mysterious and evil planet called Gordess moves through the darkness of the cosmos, and after everyone else has given up fighting its awesome power, one soldier riding a space patroller answers the challenge. Star Force stands out as one of the console's earliest straight ahead arcade shooters, and as one of the handful of titles that supported the infamous Power Glove.

Play is simple to pick up and hard to master. You guide a single fighter upward through one continuous flight across the galaxy, weaving between formations of enemies and firing without pause. Star Force is a one player game built around speed, pattern reading and score, with each stretch of space closing on a large enemy structure that has to be broken down before you can press on. Learning where the generous hidden bonuses are tucked away is a large part of the fun, and the difference between a casual run and a serious high score.

Players still come back to Star Force because it gets out of the way and lets you fly. There is no slow opening and no long setup, just the hum of the engine and wave after wave of enemies, which is exactly what made Hudson Soft's shooters so popular. For collectors, Star Force is an important early piece of the Nintendo Entertainment System library and a clear window into how quickly arcade shooting translated to the home console. Put it on the shelf beside Star Soldier and the rest of Hudson's space games and the family resemblance shows immediately.
