Star Odyssey - for Genesis

Star Odyssey is a science fiction role playing game developed by Hot B and published by Kodansha for the Sega Genesis in 1991, first released as Blue Almanac. In its far future, mankind has long since left Earth and spread across the Milky Way, settling on different planets and sometimes coming into contact with other races. You play a nameless young man who survived a spaceship crash as a child and had to find shelter on a new world. Now he is sixteen, and his parents send him to the planet Terra as a foreign student. That is where the adventure begins.

Star Odyssey plays in the Japanese style of its day. You build a party, travel from world to world, run into random encounters and settle them in turn based combat, picking attacks from a menu while the fight plays out from a side view with both your party's blows and the enemies' fully animated. Progress comes from exploring, talking to the people you find, equipping what you gather and earning the levels you need for the next stretch of the story, and it is a single player game from the first scene to the last.

Role playing games were thin on the ground on the Sega Genesis, which is a large part of why Star Odyssey still has such a following. It is warm, straightforward and generous with its space opera setting, the kind of game that rewards an unhurried evening rather than a quick burst. For collectors it has long been one of the quieter names in the console's library, and having Star Odyssey on the shelf beside the better known Genesis role playing games fills a real gap in the story of the system.
