Starshot - Space Circus Fever - for N64

Starshot: Space Circus Fever is an action platformer for the Nintendo 64, developed and published by Infogrames in 1998. You play Starshot, the star juggler of the Space Circus, and the premise is as strange and charming as that sounds. The Space Circus faces extinction at the hands of a crooked competitor, the Virtua Circus, and its boss Wolfgang von Ravel, so your courage and skill are what stand between the show and the end of it. What makes Starshot stand out is that setting: a bright 3D world built from circus acts, planets and performers rather than the usual green hills.

Starshot has total freedom of movement in that world. He can walk, run, jump, swim and fly, he talks to the characters he meets, and he throws stars that he can steer after they leave his hands, which turns both fights and puzzles into matters of aim and timing rather than speed. Exploring and conversation carry as much weight as platforming here, and with more than 300 characters from a variety of planets there is almost always someone new to stop and listen to. The 3D graphics are rich and colorful, and Starshot: Space Circus Fever is a single player game from start to finish.

Starshot: Space Circus Fever is remembered as one of the Nintendo 64's true oddities, and that is exactly why players keep seeking it out. Anyone who wore out the big mascot platformers of the period tends to be glad to find one they have not already played to pieces, and this is often that game. For collectors, Starshot is a good example of Infogrames near the end of the 1990s and a welcome outsider beside the better known names on a Nintendo 64 shelf. It is a cheerful, imaginative platformer that deserves the room.
