Stealth ATF - for NES

Stealth ATF is a flight game developed by Imagineering and published by Activision for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989. You pilot the Nighthawk stealth fighter through a run of missions, and the game sits comfortably between a simulator and an arcade shooter: enough instruments and procedure to feel like flying, enough action to keep things moving. Stealth ATF stands out among console flight titles of its day for giving players total freedom of movement in the air and a set of theaters that span the Middle East, Alaska and the Pacific.

Every mission in Stealth ATF opens and closes on the runway, shown from the side, and you handle the takeoff and the landing yourself. Complete your objectives but fail the landing and the mission has to be flown again. In the air the view moves inside the cockpit, the terrain is endless, and enemies reappear on the radar whenever they fly out of range. Your job is to shoot down a set number of aerial targets using a cannon with unlimited ammunition and eight missiles. Stealth mode can be triggered once per mission to shake off an incoming missile, and a perfect mission earns a bonus round.

Stealth ATF can be played by one or two players taking turns, and a second player can also take control of whichever aircraft is nearest the center of the radar, in either mode. Players who like it tend to like it for the details: the side view landings, the option to switch the music off and fly to engine sounds alone, the feeling of open sky in every direction. For collectors, Stealth ATF is a good representative of Activision's console work at the end of the eighties and an easy pick for anyone building a flight section in a Nintendo Entertainment System collection.
