Steel Empire - for Genesis

Steel Empire is a shooter developed by Hot B and published by Acclaim Entertainment for the Sega Genesis in 1992, and it looks like almost nothing else on the console. This is the age of steel: mammoth battleships cruise the skies, armored locomotives carry cannons the size of railway cars, invincible fortresses float on air, and the Motorhead Empire has conquered and enslaved most of the world. One hope remains in the Republic of Silverhead, and Steel Empire hands you its machines and asks you to go and wage the war.

You choose your craft before you fly: the Zeppelin, slower and sturdier, which launches lethal aerial mines, or the Striker airplane, quicker and lighter, firing armor piercing missiles. Both can shoot ahead and behind, which matters more than you expect once Motorhead's flame shooting juggernauts start closing in from both sides, and the Lightning Bomb is there for the moments when reducing the screen to crumbling hulks of burning metal is the only way through. Steel Empire is a single player game, scrolling through riveted skies, factories and fleets.

What keeps Steel Empire loved is its world: a future that might have been, drawn in brass and smoke, with bosses the size of buildings and music that marches along with them. It is firm but fair, more welcoming than much of the shooter pack of its era, and it has gone on to find new players through later releases on other systems. For collectors the Sega Genesis version is where all of that began, and Steel Empire remains one of the handsomest shooters in the entire library.
