Street Fighter II' - Special Champion Edition - for Genesis

Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition is Capcom's own conversion of its arcade phenomenon, released for the Sega Genesis in 1993. Twelve of the toughest fighters ever to prowl the streets came from the corners of the globe, and here every one of them is yours: the eight challengers plus the four Grand Masters. You can knock an opponent out for the count as Balrog, tower over your prey as Sagat and daze them with the Tiger Shot, slash with Vega's claw, or step in as M. Bison and let the fear do some of the work.

The cartridge holds more than one way to play. Champion Edition keeps the measured pace that made Street Fighter II famous, while the faster setting turns the same matches into something closer to a sprint, and around them sit modes for single play against the console, two player versus and group or tournament style evenings with a room full of challengers. Bouts run as best of three rounds, mirror matches are allowed, and the six button pad Sega put out alongside this game gives every punch and kick a button of its own.

Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition is still the reason many people kept a Genesis plugged in, and it remains the yardstick other fighting games on the console are measured against. The move lists have held up, the balance has held up, and two players on one sofa is as good a way to spend an evening now as it was then. For collectors it is a cornerstone: Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition is one of the defining cartridges of the sixteen bit years and belongs in any Genesis collection that means to tell the whole story.
