Super Baseball 2020 - for SNES

Super Baseball 2020 is a futuristic baseball game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Monolith and published by Tradewest in 1993, carried over from the arcade and Neo Geo game by SNK. The premise is the hook: the year is 2020, baseball has become a contest between human and machine, and the diamond itself has been rebuilt as the Cyber Egg Stadium. Super Baseball 2020 keeps the shape of the sport and then bends almost everything else, which is a large part of why it has never really dated.

Two leagues hold twelve teams in all, each fielding a mix of armoured human players and robots built for the job. The stadium is an opponent too, with hazards out in the field and surfaces that refuse to behave the way grass does, and credits earned during play can be spent on upgrades that make your lineup faster or stronger. Underneath the chrome it is still pitch, bat and field, so anyone who knows baseball can pick it up at once, and a second player can take the other dugout.

Super Baseball 2020 is loved because it solves the problem of sports games getting too serious: this is baseball for people who would rather watch a robot shortstop buy an upgrade. The art has a confidence that holds up, matches move quickly, and the two player mode is still an easy sell to someone who claims not to like baseball games. Collectors keep it near the top of the SNES sports pile for exactly that reason, as the sport played straight and then played for fun.
