Super Batter Up - for SNES

Super Batter Up brought major league baseball to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed and published by Namco, a studio with deep roots in baseball games. Packed into 8 megabits, it offers three stadiums and twenty six teams staffed with real major league players and their statistics, which was a strong draw in the early years of the console. Super Batter Up aims squarely at the grand slam feeling: a clean, quick playing take on the sport that gets you into the batter's box without a long detour through menus.

Control passes to you everywhere it matters, in the batter's box, on the pitcher's mound and out in the field, so you can wallop a home run over the fence, throw a smoking fastball or dive for a hard to catch fly ball. Pick your favorite team and go head to head with a friend, or go it alone in league mode for a full season of slugging. Managing matters too: change the lineup or call in a pinch hitter when the situation turns, and the player statistics give you something to base those calls on.

Super Batter Up still has fans because it plays fast and feels fair, the kind of baseball game you can hand to someone who has never touched a controller and still enjoy yourself in the ninth inning. The two player mode has aged especially well, and the simple, readable presentation keeps it friendly decades on. For collectors, Super Batter Up is an early Super Nintendo sports title from Namco and a cornerstone of any 16 bit baseball shelf, sitting comfortably beside the console's later, heavier simulations.
