Super C - for NES

Super C is the Nintendo Entertainment System sequel to Contra, developed and published by Konami in 1990. Red Falcon is back after losing a confrontation with the Super Commandos, stronger than ever, with a sinister plan to seep his intergalactic warriors into the brains of the U.S. Army. To back his disguised forces he has recruited Jagger Froid, a demented alien from the Black Hole Galaxy, and shuttled in the Babula Destructoid Mechanism with its Beam of Death. Super C is one of the finest run and gun games on the console, and it earned that standing with pace, precision and enormous firepower.

Super C runs across eight levels of Red Falcon's terror, radioactive lava fields among them, and alternates between stages that scroll sideways and sections viewed from above. You play Scorpion, with a friend able to join as the Dogster for cooperative play, and the arsenal is the heart of it: spread guns, lasers, flame throwers and mega shells, each one changing how you handle a screen full of enemies. Stages close on large bosses that have to be picked apart, and a single hit costs you a life, so Super C stays tense from the first step to the last.

Players still love Super C for how good it feels in the hands. The controls are sharp, the levels are short and memorable, and running it with a friend remains one of the best ways to spend half an hour on the console. Like the first Contra it is hard, but hard in a way that invites another go rather than ending the evening. For collectors, Super C is a cornerstone Konami release and one of the most sought after action games on the Nintendo Entertainment System, the kind of title a shelf is not really complete without.
