Super Cars - for NES

Super Cars is an overhead racing game built by Gremlin Graphics Software and published by Electro Brain for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. The pitch is pure arcade bravado: the roar of engines and high powered machinery in your ears, a slick Nissan GTO 300ZX Turbo under you, and the best drivers in the world standing between you and the supreme championship. What sets Super Cars apart from most console racers of its era is money. Prize winnings are not just a score, they are the fuel for your next upgrade.

Races run from a high overhead view on tight, twisting circuits, and the pack does not politely make room. You weave through rivals, slide around oil slicks and bump over dirt piles, all while watching the clock and the car ahead. Between events you visit the garage and spend your earnings on extras such as turbo chargers, missiles and retro brakes, turning a decent car into something that can genuinely bully the field. Super Cars is a single player game, so the challenge is you against the circuit and the drivers who want your prize money.

Players keep coming back to Super Cars because it rewards nerve. Driving clean is rarely enough: you have to decide when to spend, when to fire and when to risk the inside line. That loop of race, earn, improve and race again still feels lively decades later, and the game's place in the Gremlin Graphics catalogue gives it a following among people who follow that studio's work. On the shelf, Super Cars is a tidy pick for anyone collecting Nintendo Entertainment System racers beyond the usual famous names.
