Super Gussun Oyoyo 2 is a block stacking puzzle game developed by Kan's and published by Banpresto in 1996. It is the sequel to Super Gussun Oyoyo, which was itself a remastered version of the Gussun Oyoyo arcade game, and unlike its predecessor it stayed exclusive to the Super Famicom. It was released only in Japan, and this cartridge plays an English fan translation. Where most puzzle games of the era asked you to clear lines, Super Gussun Oyoyo 2 asks you to build: the falling blocks are not your enemy but your construction material, and your job is to get a small bald hero safely across the screen.

The most obvious change from the first game is the setting, a tropical island with an active volcano. Many stages begin dropping fireballs the longer you dawdle, which must be avoided at all costs and which turns a thoughtful stacking game into something closer to a race against your own hesitation. Super Gussun Oyoyo 2 also adds a Puzzle Mode in the spirit of the extra modes found in later Tetris games: you get a limited set of predetermined pieces and have to work out the only arrangement that will carry your little friend to the end. Two players are supported, which is where the stacking turns competitive and the laughing starts.

People still love Super Gussun Oyoyo 2 for its personality. The premise is gentle and silly, the difficulty curve is sharp, and the pressure of a volcano spitting fireballs while you calculate one more block is a lovely kind of stress. The Puzzle Mode stages in particular have the satisfying click of a good brain teaser. For collectors it is a charming Super Famicom puzzle title that deserves to be better known outside Japan, and an excellent reason to leave a second controller plugged in.
