Super Hang-On - for Genesis

Super Hang-On brought Sega's arcade motorcycle racing to the Genesis in 1989, developed by Sega AM2. You sit behind a superbike at speeds where the scenery turns into a blur, leaning into corners with the horizon tilting around you. Super Hang-On stood out for its sense of motion: the road rushes at you, the engine note climbs and falls with the throttle, and the music was clearly written to be played loud. It is one of those games that communicates speed through feel rather than through numbers on a screen.

There are two ways to ride. One sends you across four continents against the clock, with checkpoints deciding whether your run continues, each route bringing its own scenery and its own rhythm of long straights and sudden hairpins. The other puts you on a specially designed circuit against a rival, with money on the line: prize money pays for upgrades, so an ordinary bike can be built up into something that holds the front of the pack. Both make use of the turbo boost, a band of speed above your top gear that rewards nerve on the straights and punishes it everywhere else. Time trials are there whenever you just want to chase your own best run.

Players keep Super Hang-On in rotation because it asks very little and gives back a lot. A race lasts minutes, the controls amount to a lean and a throttle, and the pleasure is in shaving a second off a corner you have taken a hundred times. The soundtrack has a following all its own. For collectors, Super Hang-On is one of the earliest Genesis releases and one of the clearest examples of what Sega's arcade division was doing at the time, which makes it a cornerstone rather than a curiosity.
