Super Hydlide - for Genesis

Super Hydlide is an action role playing game from T&E Soft, published by Asmik and released on the Sega Genesis in 1989. It is the third entry in the Hydlide series, known as Hydlide 3: The Space Memories, and it carries on the series tradition of a quiet land facing an old evil all over again. Centuries after a lone hero drove back the demon Varalys, a column of fire erupts beneath Hydlide, strange doors appear from nowhere, the ground cracks open and floods swallow villages. Then the monsters come, an oracle speaks of a young man who can save Hydlide, and that is where you come in.

Super Hydlide opens with character creation: you choose one of four classes, Warrior, Thief, Priest or Monk, and that choice shapes how you fight. Combat uses melee weapons, ranged weapons and magic, and unlike earlier Hydlide games you press an attack button rather than simply walking into enemies, which gives fights a more deliberate feel. The world runs on its own internal clock, with time passing as you travel, so your hero has to sleep and rest to keep his strength up. Food, equipment and what you can carry all matter. It is a single player game and an unhurried one, closer to a world you live in than a course you run.

Super Hydlide has a devoted following for exactly the things that made it unusual: the clock, the need to eat and sleep, the sense that the world is going about its business whether you are watching or not. It rewards patience and a notebook, and players who give it both tend to remember it for years. For collectors, Super Hydlide is one of the Genesis's early role playing games and one of the few Hydlide titles Western players ever got to try, which makes it a genuinely interesting shelf piece beside the console's better known adventures.
