Super James Pond is a platform game developed by VectorDean and published by American Softworks in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It stars the series' unlikely hero, a fish in a suit, and picks up with Dr. Maybe's dangerously fishy plans for world domination still very much in progress. In a slimy effort to sabotage the world's largest toy factory, the doctor has planted penguin bombs in toy factories inside the North Pole, and James Pond bubbles to the rescue in another massive oceanic adventure. What makes Super James Pond memorable is tone: bright, cheerful, slightly daft, and happy to put a secret behind almost anything.
It plays as a side scrolling single player platformer built around exploration rather than speed. Levels sprawl through the toy factories, stacked with ledges, machinery, crates and doorways, and much of the fun comes from poking at the scenery to see what opens up. Pond's suit is the hook: he can stretch upward to reach platforms that look well out of range, which turns vertical spaces into puzzles and makes hidden corners worth hunting for. Enemies are dealt with by landing on them, and progress is a steady mix of jumping, climbing, collecting and finding the route the designers tucked away where nobody sensible would look.
Super James Pond still has a following because it is such good natured company. It never takes itself seriously, the music is bouncy, the stretching mechanic feels unlike any other platformer on the system, and the generous number of hiding places rewards players who like to sweep a stage clean before moving on. For collectors it represents a very British strand of early nineties game making, a mascot platformer with its own daft logic, and a friendly Super Nintendo cartridge that newcomers and lapsed players pick up again without needing a manual.
