Super Mario Omega is a fan-made version of the original game, created by fans and released in 2013 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Higsby built it over two and a half years, and that patience shows in the size of the finished adventure. Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach once again, and this time he has carried her off to the mysterious Gemtoa Region, a place of tall cliffs and small islands divided into six main territories. The Koopa Kids have each taken over one of those territories, so Super Mario Omega asks Mario to win the land back while he searches for the Princess.
Mario travels through over seven unique worlds on his way to Peach, and a hundred exits are hidden across them. That total tells you what sort of game this is: Super Mario Omega rewards the player who prods at suspicious walls, follows odd pipes and wonders what a cliff might be hiding. Reaching the end is one achievement, finding all 100 exits is the other. The territory structure gives the search a clear shape, since each region can be cleared, left behind and returned to later. Two players are supported, taking turns.
Super Mario Omega is still loved because it is generous. Years of work went into those worlds, and the hundred exits mean it keeps giving long after a first run is over. Collectors tend to like it for the same reason: it is a substantial fan project, not a quick remix, and it represents a corner of Super Nintendo history where players kept making new worlds for a console that had stopped getting them. Set beside the Mario platformers it grew from, Super Mario Omega holds its own on the shelf and in the slot.
