Super Metroid: Phazon is a fan-made version of the original Super Metroid, created by fans and released in 2011 through Metroid Construction. It is the work of A_red_monk_called_Key, and it is a full project rather than a light touch: Phazon brings new rooms, new items, new enemies and new graphics to the Super Nintendo classic. That makes it a genuine second adventure for Samus rather than a familiar one with the furniture moved, and it is the sort of ambitious work the Metroid Construction community became known for.

The controls are the ones you already have in your hands, since Samus runs, jumps, shoots, bombs and rolls exactly as she does in Super Metroid. What changes is everything around her. New rooms mean a map you have to learn from scratch, new enemies mean working out what hurts them, and new items mean paying attention to what each upgrade opens up. Phazon is a single player adventure, and it rewards the usual Metroid habits: hold the map in your head, note the door you cannot open yet, come back when you have the tool for it.

Super Metroid: Phazon holds up because a complete fan project is a rare thing, and because it gives long time players something the source game cannot: a world they have never seen. It stands as a good example of what the Metroid Construction community produced in the early 2010s, when full length projects like this were becoming possible.
