Super Off Road - The Baja - for SNES

Super Off Road: The Baja takes the Super Off Road name out of the arena and into the desert. Leland Interactive Media developed it and Tradewest published it for the Super Nintendo in 1993, trading the overhead view of the earlier arcade style races for a view from behind the truck, with big hills, bumps and jumps coming straight at you. The setting is the real draw: this is Baja racing, long and dusty and punishing, with world champion Ivan Stewart among the drivers you line up against.

The season runs through three events, The Mexico 250, The Ensenada 500 and the granddaddy of them all, The Baja 1000, broken into eight separate legs patterned after the actual Baja racecourse. Between stints you pull into the pits to repair and customize your vehicle, spending what you have earned on the parts that suit the terrain ahead rather than settling on one ideal setup. Super Off Road: The Baja plays with one or two players, so a friend can take the other seat and fight you for position over the same rough ground.

What keeps Super Off Road: The Baja in rotation is how physical it feels. Landings matter, your truck wears down, and bringing a long leg home in one piece becomes its own small victory, which gives the racing a weight that smoother games on the system never aim for. It is also one of the more distinctive entries in the Super Off Road family, the one that left the stadium behind, and that makes it an easy pick for a Super Nintendo racing shelf that already holds the better known names. Fans of desert racing, and of early 1990s sports personalities in games, will find plenty here.
