Super Pitfall is the Nintendo Entertainment System sequel to Pitfall! and Pitfall II: Lost Caverns, developed by Micronics and published by Activision in 1986. Pitfall Harry is back underground, this time hunting the famed Raj Diamond and searching for his niece Rhonda and his loyal lion sidekick Quickclaw. Super Pitfall was among the earliest third party games on the console, and it carries Harry out of the flat jungle screens of the Atari era into a sprawling world you explore rather than simply cross.
Harry now carries a gun, and the adventure stretches across some 270 screens of 8 bit action platforming. You climb, jump, shoot and search for valuable items that open the way forward, while snakes, spiders, falling rocks and boiling lava do their best to end the trip early. Super Pitfall keeps its secrets close: a good deal of the game is about working out where a hidden item or passage must be. Up to two players can take part.
Super Pitfall has a reputation, and that is a large part of why people still talk about it. It is tough, cryptic and uncompromising in a way few modern games would attempt, and the players who crack it tend to stay fond of it for life. It is also a notable piece of Activision history, the point at which a defining Atari character moved to Nintendo hardware. For collectors of early Nintendo Entertainment System releases, or of the Pitfall series itself, Super Pitfall is a cartridge with a real story attached.
